Medium Readers Puzzle Me

Why do I have Medium followers?

It’s only been 4 months since I became a member. I admit I haven’t mastered all, or even many, of the “hows” of Medium. And from my title you know I don’t understand the whys.

I haven’t registered for the partnership program. I don’t have immediate plans to. Most of my stories read by others are my responses to other members’ stories. I understand the claps. I usually write positive or at least constructive responses. It makes sense I would get claps.

But why do I have the followers I do?

To be honest I don’t follow just anyone, although maybe I should. I read something they wrote. I want to follow writers who speak to me. Can I assume I speak to the members who follow me?

My stats indicate my followers don’t routinely read what I write. Out of 20 stories I have 9 reads. That sounds sad. Most of those stories haven’t been seen by anyone other than me. And out of 90 responses, I have 482 reads. That sounds better. And it makes sense because I am responding to often read stories that lead to my response. However, of those reads, most are for just 4 of my responses.

So why do I have followers? Is Medium just a social media platform where users become my followers in hopes I will follow them and read their stories? Perhaps they are getting paid, so if I follow them back and happen to read their story, they get more money.

Reading is my Romance.

What drew me to join Medium was reading others’ writing, the potential for dialogue, and the thought of sharing ideas. I do so enjoy the reading. The claps are a form of dialogue. Writers are sharing ideas with me. Maybe I’m sharing a few with others. I’m a hopeless romantic.
